About Aware & Awake
Cancer in all forms is responsible for about 12% of deaths globally. In developed countries cancer is the second leading cause of death, next only to cardiovascular diseases (accounting for 21% of deaths). In the developing countries, cancer is the third most common cause of death and accounts for 9.5% of all deaths. Cancer prevalence in India is estimated to be around 2.0 to 2.5 million, with over 8-9 lakh new cases detected every year. More than 70% of the cases report for diagnostic and treatment services in the advanced stages of the disease, leading to a poor survival and high mortality rate. At any point of time, it is estimated that there are nearly 25 lakh cases in the country. Every year about 4 lakh deaths occur due to cancer. Breast cancer, cervical cancer and oral cancer are the three most common cancers in India in terms of incidence and mortality .Cancers namely those of oral and lungs in males and cervix and breast in females account for over 50% of all cancer deaths in India. Together, they account for about 34% of more than 1 million individuals diagnosed with cancer in India each year.
There are no organized cancer screening programs existing in India. As per individual interest of panchayath and NGOs, sporadic opportunistic screenings have occurred from time to time. At least one-third of all cancer cases are preventable. Prevention offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of cancer. Tobacco, Physical inactivity, dietary factors, obesity and being overweight, Alcohol use, Infections, environmental pollution, occupational carcinogens are the known causes of cancer. 40% of the cancers in the country are related to tobacco use. In short, one third of all cancers are preventable and awareness activities can play a long way in cancer prevention. Primary prevention of cancer requires many years to show up the result. While proceeding with primary prevention strategy, early detection of cancer and awareness of cancer need to be simultaneously concentrated upon. If cancer is detected early
- The cost of treatment is low,
- It may require only one modality of treatment
- The duration of treatment is less
- Convalescence is less
- Complications due to treatment will be less
- They can return to normal life at the earliest
- More importantly, the cure rate is high.
In the era of ICT, the Online Cancer Aware project plays a very important role. In India, especially in Kerala the usage mobile and internet is very high. Also peoples are very much active in social media like Face book, Twitter and Whatsapp. For using the strength of these social media, we can create an effective way of cancer awareness programme. Cancers related to tobacco use, heavy use of alcohol and obesity are most effectively prevented through a combination of education and social policies that encourage healthy behaviors. Awareness leads to early detection of cancers and provides greater chance that treatment will be successful. Early detection is associated with better prognosis and higher survival rates, and is therefore considered the key to cancer control (World Health Organization, 2009). Online Cancer awareness project helps us to attain these objectives. We hope the fear prevailing about cancer in the society and the ability to fight against cancer will definitely show its fruits through the awareness programme.
Objective: The objective of the project is to develop an online cancer awareness programme using the strength of social media and multimedia. The secondary objective of the project is to develop short animation videos for cancer awareness and to alert false information against cancer.
